An innovative employee-owned start-up based in Edinburgh, Intradrive seeks to tackle the climate and ecological emergency in a meaningful way, by developing low carbon transportation technology built for longevity and manufactured using a circular economy approach.
It aims to manufacture using processes powered by renewable electricity, avoiding the use of oil-based materials, or carbon offsetting. It believes a product can only be considered environmentally friendly if it is fossil fuel free.
Intradrive’s gearbox-based system is designed for longevity and durability, making drivetrain maintenance a thing of the past. The sealed gearbox and motor unit is designed to outlast the rest of the bike, with minimal maintenance.
This results in lower embodied carbon emissions and reduced material throughput. Generally, e-bike drivetrain components in heavy duty applications need replacing after as little as one year, whereas Intradrive technology lasts over ten years.
Intradrive has completed five years of R&D, and its fully proprietary motor and gearbox technology is now at pre-production prototype stage, with plans to start volume production in 2023.
Recognising the severity of the climate and ecological emergency, and the role capitalism plays in this, Intradrive will adopt a degrowth business model which prioritises people and planet over profit.
