EMEC is the world’s first and leading facility for demonstrating and testing wave and tidal converters – technologies that generate electricity by harnessing the power of the sea.
It offers purpose-built, open sea testing facilities for prototype technologies. It operates two grid-connected accredited test sites where larger prototypes are put through their paces and two scale test sites where smaller scale devices, subsystems and tools can gain real sea experience in less challenging conditions.
EMEC’s facilities help to prove what is achievable in some of the harshest marine environments, reducing the time, cost and risk of demonstrating technologies in the ocean.
More marine energy devices have been tested at EMEC than at any other single site in the world.
Building on this unprecedented experience, EMEC has diversified to use its infrastructure, skills, and knowledge to progress other low-carbon technologies, including green hydrogen, offshore wind, maritime and aviation, and energy systems.
EMEC was set up to kick start an ocean energy sector in the UK and boost economic development in the Highlands and Islands. It will continue to be a catalyst in low carbon technology development, demonstrating the clean energy system of the future to help the world decarbonise and reach net zero.
